What’s a Nosh Mob you aks? It’s a social gathering where you can meet like-minded foodies at locally-owned restaurants and businesses to take advantage of special discounts, win $100 restaurant gift certificates, and learn tips from chefs and food producers. Nosh Mob events take place on a regular basis and have a fun, educational element to them.

Fish’s Nosh Mob will begin at 5:30 pm tomorrow (Tuesday, December 1st). Executive Chef Nico Romo will start the event by taking Nosh Mob members on a tour of Fish kitchen. He’ll be highlighting the fresh seafood selections that come into the restaurant daily, our special kitchen elements like a walk-in freezer made specifically for cleaning fish and introducing the Mob to our super talented cooks and sous chefs. Following the tour, the Mob will head over to the catering kitchen for a demonstration by Nico on the history of dim sum and his French-Asian fusion techniques. Plan to enjoy samples of his one-of-a-kind dim sum and Mixologist Evan Powell’s specialty fusion cocktail.

Immediately following the demonstration Fish will be offering a three course Mercy of the Chef menu for $25 for those Nosh Mobbers that would like to stay and experience the cuisine they just learned about.

The event is FREE to Nosh Mob members (sign up here) and door prizes will include a $100 gift certificate to Fish among other goodies. Space is limited so make sure to sign up as soon as possible.

Happy Noshing!

Patrick Properties Events knows good style! We’ll also be at the Cannon Elliot Lounge at 45 John Street, so make sure to grab some info for your upcoming event.

I finally did it. I broke down and bought an iPhone. They’re great gadgets for so very many reasons (paying bills, booking airline tickets, checking the weather, digging through an overstuffed purse with the flashlight app) but I have definitely found a favorite app among the myriad of options that I use much more often than the rest. It’s called urbanspoon and I gotta say, I don’t know how my incredibly indecisive self got along before it.

The basic gist is similar to a Vegas-style slot machine. The phone reads where you are located and when you shake it, it spins three dials and spits out a restaurant option for you nearby. You can filter your results based on what part of town you are interested in, what style of food you’re craving or how much you want to spend. For example, say you want a restaurant on the Charleston peninsula that serves dim sum. Lock those in, shake it up and it might suggest Fish. Cool, right? Not only that, but after it gives you the restaurant choice you can read reviews, see ratings, pictures, menus, etc. until you find a place that you’d like to try. I have discovered no less than three fantastic local restaurants by using this app. You don’t have to have an iPhone to use this wonderful little tool either, the website works the same way and is a great way to solve the age old question, “what’s for dinner?”

Fish on Urbanspoon

In related news, one of Fish’s sous chefs, Trung, took a video of the moo shu eating contest we hosted at the farmers market last weekend on his phone. It just amazes me how far media has come. You can take a photo or video on your phone and upload it to facebook or twitter and have people viewing and commenting within minutes. From a phone. Remember the good ol’ days when you needed a camera that held negatives that you had to manually wind and it took a week to get the film back? And remember the anticipation and excitement of flipping through the never before seen photos from so-and-so’s birthday party for the first time? There’s no app for that.

Sorry for the hiatus, Internet. Patrick Properties has seen its fair share of activity this summer and we admit you’ve been neglected. We promise to be more attentive. What has kept us so busy? Here’s the short list:

1. Launching the new summer menu at Fish. My recommendation: The poached egg dumpling. Duck Confit, goat cheese, truffle frisée salad, bacon, basically all good things rolled up into one outrageous dumpling with some delicious on the side.

2. Welcoming a new Sales Director and a new Sales Manager. Ashley Gunnin, former GM of Lowndes Grove has signed on as our new Director of Sales. Sarah Copeland, also of Lowndes Grove fame, will be joining her as our new Sales Manager. Congratulations to you both!

3. Revamping our Facebook page. Check us out: Fish

4. Mixing Bombay Sapphire cocktails. Fish Manager Evan Powell’s attempt to win a spot in GQ magazine (more on this later this week).

5. Hosting unforgettable weddings and events.

6. Oh, and throwing a little Bastille Day fête. Over 300 guests joined us for Fish’s first Bastille Day celebration on July 14th. The evening was a huge success and a feast for all the senses, including French food displays with paté and cheeses, pétanque (bocce) on King Street, a massive French Flag flying from the American Theater, accordion and violin players, can-can dancers from Charleston Ballet Theatre, a Marie Antoinette ballerina, live chickens and a slew of French natives conversing in French all evening long. It’s going to be difficult to top next year, but no worries, we’re already brainstorming. There’s been mention of a guillotine on more than one occasion… stay tuned.

Check out some of Team PP as we bid bon voyage to Managing Partner Randall Goldman and Director of Events Jennifer as they embark on a 2-week holiday to Paris, Florence and sundry other European cities. I certainly hope they behave themselves, as we don’t collectively have enough American dollars to bail them out of any European jails. Have you seen the Euro lately? Just sayin’.

In other news, it’s a big weekend at PP, kids: a graduation shindig at The American Theater tonight, ceremony rehearsal at The William Aiken House and graduation revelers at Fish.

Congrats to all the College of Charleston and Citadel graduates. As you head out into what certainly is the most challenging job market in several generations, let me offer a few gentle words of advice.

1. Remove any incriminating photos from your Facebook page. Employers use Facebook just like you do. And while your pyramid of beer cans may have broken campus records, it will probably not win you any employee of the month awards. Oh, and don’t poke people. Ever.

2. Your first job is just that: your first one. What that means is simply: however daunting/entry level/overwhelming/amazing/horrific/awe-inspiring, etc. your first job may be, remind yourself that you will have a good couple of jobs during the course of your working career and all of them hold lessons.

3. Do some kind of volunteer work. Donate blood; bag up some clothes you no longer wear and take them to Goodwill. Help build a house. Be a Big Brother or a Big Sister. I’m guessing you didn’t graduate without a little help from someone along the way. So why not give a little something back?

4. The glass is half full. Yes, we’re in a recession. Yes, the competition for jobs is fierce. But the reality is, there’s never been a better time to get creative. Complaining is so easy, but after about 10 minutes of it, ask yourself this: what NOW? Take a look around this city. There are fabulously creative people doing wildly amazing things. Find the thing you’re most passionate about and run with it. Talk to people who are experts in the industry you love. Build community. Wow yourself first and the rest of us just may follow.
