Our in-house mixologist, Evan Powell, has been recognized for outstanding achievement in cocktail making. He’s been hand selected as one of only 25 contestants in Charleston to participate in a cocktail competition sponsored by Bombay Sapphire and GQ magazine for the ‘Most Inspired Bartender.’ He’s kind of a big deal.
His cocktail, the Bombay Bengal, was judged this afternoon and we’re feeling good. He’s done his research about the botanical flavors of gin and how to combine citrus flavors to create a truly sensational cocktail that can be enjoyed alone, or with food. He’s also incorporated some fresh ginger, a common ingredient used at Fish, to tie in the Asian influence of the restaurant. Using the Japanese style of handcrafting cocktails, he’s taking his time to use the best ingredients and preparing the drink as an entertaining presentation for the guest to enjoy. Sort of a throwback to a more relaxed and enjoyable approach to cocktails. If that isn’t inspired, I don’t know what is.
Yesterday during happy hour I had a chance to taste the Bengal. One word: fierce. Sweet, but not too sweet, hints of fresh ginger and orange, and a spicy note at the end had my friend declaring it the “perfect drink for summer.” If he wins in Charleston he’ll move on to Las Vegas to compete with contestants from all over the country and will be featured in GQ magazine. We’re headed to the Riviera tonight at 9 for the Bombay Sapphire Party to benefit ‘Charleston Chefs Feed The Need’ in our finest. Pics to come. I’ll keep you posted on his celebrity status when the winners are announced at the party tonight. Good luck, Evan!
