Autumn on standby

Fish

Happy First Day of Autumn! I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and this time of year I am reminiscent of orange and red palettes on the trees, the smells of burning leaves and new school supplies, the welcome new crispness in the air and the rich seasonal flavors that come with the impending holiday madness. Pumpkin, cinnamon, apples, butternut squash…

Flashback to Charleston, SC. In case you have not been outside today it is H-O-T, hot outside. Ain’t nothin’ golden or crisp about the air as the Lowcountry humidity continues to envelope my ever-frizzing hairdo.

That being said, Fish Executive Chef Nico Romo has made the very executive decision to put autumn on standby. That is, the Fish menu selection that was supposed to change over today from summer to fall is being held until the Autumn produce in Charleston begins to grow and become available.

It’s similar to the “no white after Labor Day” idea. In my opinion, if it is still humid and hot, you’re OK to wear white sandals because that is what matches your summer wardrobe. Similarly, if it is still humid and hot, you can continue to eat light, refreshing flavors because that is what matches the weather. When the weather turns colder and Fall vegetables begin to grow, then you can switch to the more rich, hearty dishes and non-white, closed toed shoes. Makes sense, no?

The delay is only unfortunate because Chef is so excited about each new menu he creates, and the anticipation of the Autumn menu release will certainly be a challenge for him. But alas, his excitement will have to linger until the weather and produce are ready. For now, you can still enjoy the Summer flavors on our current menu until autumn is in full swing. I’ll keep you posted.
